You can hear yourself perfectly with the silencer …without hacking off everyone else in the house. The book that comes with it cover’s how to use the silencer effectively, with many different excersises.
It really is excellent…If used and not left in a draw 🙂

Yeah, the mouthpiece exercises were like the silver bullet for me. I was working on trying to get the overtones for most of my college career, but never really got above the middle Bb. Once you can play on your mouthpiece WITHOUT moving your lips or corners of your mouth AT ALL, it gets a lot easier. This takes a lot of concentration at first, but once you get that, it makes a lot more sense.

I have silencer for my tenor sax since 6 or 7 months. At the beginning it was a hard job: mouthpiece exercises are hard to do at the beginning. When I started to do mouthpiece exercises, I thought, well I shall spend some time on them and play some tones. So in a week or two I could play a fourth or so. But then it was very hard to me to come to fifth. Then I started to use silencer. I noticed pretty soon, that I did wrong everything. I tried to change the position of my tongue and my throat, but in reality I changed mostly the jaw pressure. This works for a forth or so. But with a silencer it don’t work at all. So I started from the beginning, as described in silencer book and on silencer video. Now it works. But it only works if I don’t change anything on my lips or in my jaw. And it only works if I have a really good support from my diaphragm. So it is a perfect training.
I still practice every day with my mouthpiece/silencer: playing scales (major, different minors, bebop, HTWT, diminished….), playing tunes with playalongs. My teacher always says to me: how can you play your impro if you don’t have it in your head? He is right: how can I improvise, if I cannot even sing a scale. I don’t have a nice voice, so I said to myself: how can you improvise if you cannot play the melody you have in your mind on the mouthpiece alone. This was very hard at the beginning, but it goes better and better every day. For me this is the very benefit from the silencer.

And: I’m really busy and don’t have a lot of time for my instrument. But I always have 5 or 10 minutes while waiting for the train or in the traffic jam to play with the mouthpiece. But without a silencer this would be an illusion.

For keeping the embochure in shape, and working on ear training and breath control, lately I’ve been using the Mouthpiece Silencer and it has been working great. I use it when I am commuting to and from work, and I’ve gotten to the point where I can play a little over an octave range, and I play scales, intervals, and tunes – all just using my mouthpiece. I never was able to do mouthpiece exercises before because the sound and vibration were too much. The silencer takes care of that, and the best part for me is that practicing this way is helping me correct a problem of not taking enough of the mouthpiece into my mouth (an easy habit to fall into when you try to play soft all the time!). With about 5 to 10 minutes a day using the silencer, I am ready to play over a big band or in a no-drums trio with the appropriate volume and good sound.
Keep swinging!

After a few days I unpacked my sax for the first time and by blowing I instantly felt that I practiced the right way with Silencer.

I am just starting the exercises, so I have a long way to go still, but I must say that your silencer product is one of the best purchases I ever made for my sax! Some time ago I wanted to do the mouthpiece exercises, but the sound was so annoying that I couldn’t bear to hear it myself, let alone bother my neighbors with it. Now, the sound is totally acceptable and I feel free to do my exercises, even in the night time. I also like the enclosed booklet and the instructional DVD. I wish I would have found your product a long time ago!

I just purchased a silencer. This purchase was in direct response to your YOUTUBE video. My wife and dog thank you. So do I.

This thing actually works properly, it does what it is designed to do and is very useful

Totally recommended, especially during traffic jams so you don’t annoy yourself with this „tweeting“ during exercises.

This is a fantastic bit of kit, that make’s playing on the mouthpiece a fun part of your day to day work-out.
We all know from the words of Joe Allard and Dave Leibman that work on the M.P’s alone is very good for us… „But Lets face it!“ the M.P’s on its own makes a nasty Din.
In one of the other post’s I saw, it was ref to as a bit of tube with a hole in it. Well not only is that wrong, but it is also a very naive thing to say.
I get up every morning, Make my coffee. then look at the post on here and home, and play on this at the same time.
Not only is this Silencer very well made, the dvd/book that come’s with this has lots of info as to how to move forward . 10 out of 10 from me.

I have a Silencer and use it for about five to ten minutes a day to do just some exercises as mentioned above. If I do it without Silencer, just on the mouthpiece alone, it sounds too loud for me and for the family … The Silencer dampens the sound a lot while not altering the feeling of an isolated mouthpiece to much.

I saw the Silencer at this year’s Frankfurt Musikmesse and went up to the stand full of scepticism, but actualy it’s a very good product.
If you don’t value these mouthpiece exercises, it’s no use to you so I would say very little point in criticising the concept. If you think they are valuable exercises and you are in the sort of environment where constantly playing very nasty high squeaky out of tune major scales could upset neighbours and/or their pets, then it’s actually very good.
It has a few drawbacks – the silenced pitch is slightly higher than the actual unsilenced pitch (not sure that actually is a drawback thinking about it) and it needs slightly more effort to play due to increased resistance. So it doesn’t emulate a mouthpiece exactly (except quieter), but OTOH, this increased resistance would actually benefit your diaphragm muscles.

I have one and I find it really useful, especially for being able to practice mouthpiece-only exercises without driving everyone crazy with the noise, including myself.
